About Polyethylene Terephthalate

pet additive

The efficacy of biodegradable PET additive comes from adding hydrophilic parameters to the polymer chain. This allows microbial enzymatic action to reduce the structure of the polymer by utilizing macromolecules within the plastic. BioSphere’s additive does not change the physical properties of the plastic. Your product will maintain regular shelf life and tensile strength while offering the benefits of enhanced biodegradation.

PET and PET fibers are compatible with our biodegradable pellet additives. Our 201 pellet additive containing 100% active ingredients works effectively in PET and PET fiber applications: in 2020, we updated our 201 pellet additives for further improved processing in extruded textile applications.

For PET applications where clarity is important, BioSphere has developed a specialty 202 pellet additive for clear thermoformed and extruded PET. Meanwhile, our 203 pellet additive was designed for clear injection molded and stretch blow molded applications.

While our biodegradable additive is compatible with PET, it also works with virtually every other polymer type.

  • Yes, biodegradation of polyethylene terephthalate and polyethylene terephthalate fibers is achievable and accelerated with the addition of BioSphere additive.

  • Polyethylene terephthalate is made up of hydrophobic polymers. Chains must be broken down into constituent parts for the energy potential to be used by microorganisms. These constituent parts (or monomers) are then readily available to other bacteria. The process of breaking these chains and dissolving the smaller molecules into a solution is called hydrolysis.

  • PET is broken down via hydrolysis (using water) into high-molecular-weight polymeric components—the necessary first step in anaerobic or aerobic biodegradation. Through hydrolysis, the polymers are converted from long chains to simple monomers and further into carbon dioxide (aerobically), methane gas (anaerobically), water, and metabolic biomass.

  • PET is used in fibers for clothing and textiles, containers for liquids and foods, and other items including thermoforming for manufacturing.
