Unverified Industrial Compost Facilities

BioSphere Plastic will begin verifying each compost facility and the temperatures that are currently being used at the compost facilities. Below is a list of the compost facilities. We will begin transcribing our conversation with each compost facility and will be posting them here on our website for your review. Currently there are 108 compost facilities that are said by BPI that can break down PLA. We are skeptical of these numbers, so we are beginning our research into validating each compost facility.

Currently, 80 Landfills under Waste Management and 594 landfills in the US capture methane gas, utilize the gas and reduce the carbon footprint. See our previous blog post regarding Waste Management Landfill to Energy projects.

BioSphere has found 3 compost facilities that accept PLA plastics.

FTC Green Guides Part C Compostable

Compostable

It is deceptive to misrepresent, directly or by implication, that a product or package is compostable. A claim that a product or package is compostable should be substantiated by competent and reliable scientific evidence that all the materials in the product or package will break down into, or otherwise become part of, usable compost (e.g., soil-conditioning material, mulch) in a safe and timely manner in an appropriate composting program or facility, or in a home compost pile or device. Claims of compostability should be qualified to the extent necessary to avoid consumer deception. An unqualified claim may be deceptive if: (1) the package cannot be safely composted in a home compost pile or device; or (2) the claim misleads consumers about the environmental benefit provided when the product is disposed of in a landfill. A claim that a product is compostable in a municipal or institutional composting facility may need to be qualified to the extent necessary to avoid deception about the limited availability of such composting facilities.

Example 4:
A nationally marketed lawn and leaf bag is labeled “compostable.” Also printed on the bag is a disclosure that the bag is not designed for use in home compost piles. The bags are in fact composted in yard trimmings composting programs in many communities around the country, but such programs are not available to a substantial majority of consumers or communities where the bag is sold. The claim is deceptive because reasonable consumers living in areas not served by yard trimmings programs may understand the reference to mean that composting facilities accepting the bags are available in their area. To avoid deception, the claim should be qualified to indicate the limited availability of such programs, for example, by stating, “Appropriate facilities may not exist in your area.” Other examples of adequate qualification of the claim include providing the approximate percentage of communities or the population for which such programs are available.

Do you accept corn based plastics? No, no plastic sir, No No corn based plastic,I don’t know what that is but I can check but no, how about is your compost at or above 140 degrees, yes, but you would need to take the corn based product to the Del Norte Landfill.

Kevin was extremely nice and pointed us to compost facilities that maybe could accept the Corn Based plastics, during certain fairs in bakersfield they use corn based plastics and he turns them to compost, but on a commercial scale they really are not in the business to do this and if they did he would have to charge a fee.

Nathan is the supervisor for the city composting facility and he told us that there isn’t a way to break down PLA he has tried, he said he may be able to take them, but he would need a certification to make sure if he burned them it wouldn’t be toxic. He was going to burn them with the wood debris.

Directed us to Recology, they do not compost. Recology directed us to the District Manager, a 45 minute phone call lead to the fact that corn based plastics are not there yet and the reality of it is, is that in California we have regulations by the state to keep our facilities at 140 degrees and turn them 5 times, we then have to sell the compost in 90 days or we lose money. If we have a static compost for corn based plastics, it would not matter we would lose money. I am going to find out what we can do to help you, but do not get your hopes up.

OMRI which is Organic Materials refuses to let composters in California sell compost when PLA has been composted with regular compost, Jepson Prairie does not compost PLA plastic unless you ship 2/3rd’s food waste with the PLA and even then they may remove the PLA and send it to the landfill.

Is PLA Compostable?

Polylactic acid or PLA is a material which has been around for tens of years. Until recently no major producer of PLA existed until they were funded by mega corporations to come into the marketplace to replace synthetic plastic. BioSphere Plastic has been asked is PLA biodegradable, while the ans...
